Abby’s Book Corner: San Antonio Style – It’s a Happenin’ Thing!
While the 2nd Annual Book Drive is underway in Dallas, we’re making plans for Abby’s Book Corner to expand into South Texas!
And – here’s the really awesome part – the books donated in South Texas will stay in South Texas,
benefiting Methodist Children’s Hospital of South Texas!!
It’s what my sister-in-law calls “Abby in Action.”

To update everyone, Abby’s Book Corner is in its second year – the 2nd Annual Book Drive has kicked off in the Dallas area, and runs through November 14th.
(For more information on the Dallas-area Book Drive, click here)
… And while the Dallas Book Drive is in full swing, plans are in the works for a similar book drive here in San Antonio…
The always wonderful, smart and funny Donna J. Tuttle – one of the co-founders of The BMPR Social Media Community in San Antonio – came up with the idea of asking those who attend the November BMPR meeting to bring a book to be donated to Abby’s Book Corner! Consider it the kick-off to ABC: San Antonio Style! Mark your calendars, the BMPR meeting is Tuesday, November 17th at the Holiday Inn San Antonio International Airport Hotel.
In April, Providence College Preparatory School will host a book drive, as part of the school’s spring service project. Tentatively set for April 19th – April 30th, it is the brainchild of my longtime friend Cheryl VanLeeuwen – a woman with a huge heart and giving spirit.
I’ll be looking for other businesses, schools, restaurants and so forth to be part of Abby’s Book Corner by hosting their own Book Drive, or teaming up with Providence HS or others throughout the year. If you know of a location that would be willing to serve as a drop-off location, pass it along to me – and if there’s an opportunity to offer those who donate books a little thank-you gift (such as The Purple Cow, Baskin-Robbins, City Pet Life and Larry North are doing in Dallas) – all the better!
As mentioned at the beginning of this post, the books gathered in San Antonio by BMPR and by the students at Providence High School will stay in San Antonio – they’ll be donated to Methodist Children’s Hospital of South Texas.

For me, it’s the best part of this San Antonio component to the book drive – we’ll be helping out families here in our community! It’s what being local, thinking local and acting local is all about – and I couldn’t be more thrilled that Abby’s Book Corner is expanding its mission to help soothe scared, hurting families here in my adopted hometown!
Aside from books, there are some very specific needs for the hospitals – whether they’re in Dallas, Plano or San Antonio. We need:
- Spanish-language books
- Teen and young adult literature (think the Harry Potter books, the Twilight series, The Chronicles of Narnia)
- coloring books and crayons
- games
- activity books
- book carts (to spread the literature love to patients and their families who can’t get out of their rooms, but still want something to read or a game to play)
- cold, hard cash
About that last category: the cold, hard cash part. Methodist Children’s Hospital doesn’t have a charitable foundation, so if you want to donate money to help us sustain Abby’s Book Corner, here’s the legal stuff you need to know:
Donations made directly to Methodist Children’s Hospital are not tax-deductible under IRS laws.
Monetary donations can be made to:
Children’s Fund of the Blue Bird Auxiliary of Methodist Hospital
7700 Floyd Curl Drive
San Antonio, TX 78229
** Please indicate the donation is for Abby’s Book Corner **
Again, thanks to everyone who has helped make Abby’s Book Corner such a success in its first year,
and will continue to help it grow this year, and in the years to come!
